What preparations should I take before a hurricane season?

Some preparations to take before hurricane season comes to Florida are:

• Make sure you’re covered! Insurance companies do not accept new application or requests for increased coverage once a hurricane nears Florida. If you have any questions or changes regarding your coverage contact your agent well in advance of a storm – even better to do this prior to Storm Season!
• Make sure your coverage is adequate. You may have made home improvements or purchases. Consider increasing your coverage if your policy does not cover the current value of your home and contents.
• Know what your insurance policy covers! Flood and wind damage are often covered in separate policies. Determine if you need this protection and contact your agent for more information on how to obtain this coverage.
• Fortify your home. Inspect your roof, making sure you have roof anchors installed on your home. Replace your windows and doors that do not pass the impact test, or have ready shutters to cover all openings with prior to a storm event. An additional benefit to this preparation is the discounts you may qualify for once they are done. Contact your insurance agent to discuss wind mitigation discounts.

NOTE: The answers to coverage questions are primarily based on ISO forms generally used in Florida by most companies. However, please keep in mind that all companies’ forms are NOT necessarily the same. Some companies may provide broader coverage and some may be more restrictive.
IN ALL CASES, THE CONSUMER MUST REFER TO HIS OR HER OWN POLICY FOR SPECIFIC COVERAGE INFORMATION.
